The College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CoMHS), formerly known as Oman Medical College (OMC), was established in 2001. As the first and only private educational institution offering private medical education in the country, it offers a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program in academic partnership with West Virginia University, USA. The 6-year medical program spans from Year 1 (MD1) to Year 6 (MD6) and comprises 258 credit hours.

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) program offered by the College of Medicine and Health Sciences is a fully accredited program by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Medical Education Programs (TEPDAD) for a period of six years, starting from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2030. This accreditation is based on the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) standards for basic medical education. The College’s success in achieving this accreditation reflects its commitment to maintaining high educational standards and continuous improvement in medical education. This achievement enhances the reputation of the medical program and ensures that graduates are well prepared to meet the demands of global healthcare.

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) program is offered as follows:

  • Preparatory year for studying medicine: This includes the first academic year of the programme (MD1).
  • Pre-clinical Years : It includes 3 consecutive academic years (MD2), (MD3) and (MD4), also called Pre-clinical Years I, II and III. The core component of Pre-clinical Year III (MD4) is designed to link the pre-clinical and clinical curriculum components.
  • Clinical study years: last for two consecutive years (MD5) and (MD6), also called the first and second clinical years.

Students also need to undergo mandatory internships to obtain their medical licenses.

The College of Medicine and Health Sciences believes in fostering a positive, learner-centered environment that supports and benefits from experiential learning. Accordingly, the curriculum includes a broad range of biomedical sciences and clinical medicine using the principles of lifelong learning, critical and clinical thinking, and professionalism.

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme is also listed in the World Health Organization (WHO) Health Professions Education Directory and the International Medical Education Directory (IMED). Moreover, the programme has been accredited by a number of top medical education bodies in many foreign countries, enabling graduates to practice medicine smoothly or continue their higher education, specialty training and fellowship outside Oman in accordance with the rules in force in the relevant countries.
