The library is a model of unity between the leadership and the people, who sought to express their love and loyalty to their King on the occasion of his accession to power. Originally a memorial, it was built at the citizens’ expense as an architectural masterpiece in cooperation with the Riyadh Municipality, which provided the land and technical, architectural, and administrative supervision. The building was designed to be a public library.
It was then transformed into the National Library of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the suggestion of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, may God protect him. King Salman played a major role in establishing and equipping the library, serving as Chairman of the Advisory Committee during the construction phase. The country thus gained a long-awaited national library, as the idea of establishing a national library had been recurring in the past four five-year plans.
