Founded by poet Sultan Al Owais on December 17, 1987, the award bears his name. It is an independent body dedicated to honoring Arab writers and thinkers. By 2023, approximately 101 Arab writers, authors, and thinkers had won the award, in addition to five cultural institutions. More than 270 judges and consultants had served as judges in its various fields.
