The acting Director General of the National Library and Archives, Mr. Barq Raad Alawi, confirmed that the House continues to grant deposit numbers to publications in implementation of the Deposit Law No. (37) of 1970, as amended, which obliges all authors and postgraduate students to submit copies of their works to the House.
The head of the Legal Deposit Department at the National Library and Archives, Ms. Shaima Hussein, explained that the mechanisms for granting a deposit number to books begin first with the author or printer signing a written pledge prepared by the Legal Affairs Division at the House, before starting the printing process, in which they pledge to provide the House with five copies upon completion of printing and before the distribution process.
She added that after signing the pledge, the author or publisher must pay the prescribed fees and prepare an index card upon publication in the Indexing and Classification Department. Following this, a deposit number is assigned to the draft copy of the publication, which is displayed either on the back of the title page or on the last page of the book. After the printing process is complete, the press must submit the five copies against a receipt. The indexing, classification, and preservation processes will then begin, in accordance with approved professional and legal procedures.
As for the procedures for granting a deposit number for university dissertations, graduate or university students must submit one copy along with a CD and pay the prescribed fees. These dissertations are not subject to the pre-printing procedures applied to books, as the deposit number is assigned directly upon receipt of the dissertation.
It is worth noting that the National Library and Archives continues its documentation and follow-up processes with all relevant parties and is keen to ensure the preservation of cultural and scientific heritage and its organization in accordance with international legal standards. This will positively impact the development of the publishing sector and the provision of integrated services to authors and researchers.

As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance openness to the academic community and provide a stimulating environment for research and study, the National Library and Archives, under the supervision of the Acting Director General, Mr. Barq Raad Allawi, welcomed a group of students from the Department of Mathematics at the College of Education at Al-Mustansiriya University, accompanied by a number of academic professors.
The visit included a field visit to the library to familiarize the students with the nature of its work and the most important services it provides to researchers and interested parties, including the electronic uses of the library’s catalogs and the mechanisms for assigning deposit numbers to books and university dissertations. The visit also included an explanation of the mechanisms for searching documents within the Documentary Information Department.
It is worth noting that this visit aimed to familiarize the students with the library’s mission in preserving the national heritage and documenting Iraqi intellectual and cultural production, in addition to enhancing their academic research skills by learning about archiving and documentation mechanisms.

In line with its strategic vision to strengthen cultural cooperation with public libraries, opening up horizons for cultural partnerships and effective governmental integration, the National Library and Archives donated dozens of scientific and cultural resources to the Fallujah Public Library.
Representative of the National Library and Archives, Mr. Mushtaq Talib, who was received by the Secretary of the Fallujah Public Library, Mr. Nasser Al-Jumaili, explained that the resources donated by the library were transferred in accordance with approved official procedures and in cooperation with the Fallujah Cultural House.
It is worth noting that the Exchange and Donation Division at the library is responsible for communicating and coordinating with cultural institutions, libraries, and individuals inside and outside Iraq, with the aim of promoting Iraqi intellectual output on the one hand, and supporting public and government libraries on the other. It also aims to strengthen cultural cooperation with all Arab and international institutions.
